We recently finished working on her zine \"Chemistry from Germany,\" which proved how well her drawings work on RISO. I was very curious to see how this vectorial approach would turn out in print, and I wasn't disappointed, seeing the effect softened by the unique subtlety and texture of the Riso. The project was designed as a red monochrome, but I decided to experiment. To increase the color intensity and avoid underprinting on the red layer, I decided to create an orange underprint. This approach resulted in more vibrant tones. However, it was a risky task, because printing the same designs twice can cause minor shifts, which can cause the irritating effect of the graphics running apart. I'm very pleased that in this unassuming project, the two colors managed to blend almost perfectly, resulting in an original, strong aesthetic. From a long list of reasons, I'd like to highlight this one: her aesthetics and extraordinary graphic sense transform even the most trivial idea into something brilliant in print. It's a real challenge for a printer not to waste the graphic's potential. Unfortunately, I made that mistake at the beginning... Perhaps a bit out of laziness, I chose the typical printing method, from lightest to darkest. And because this piece has five layers, the print has to go through my double-drum Riso three times. After the first printing session, I realized I'd started with pink, a large portion of which was exactly where the paper suction roller presses the sheet and then stains the rest of the paper. The entire print run went into the trash, and I had to start over. I love working on projects like this precisely because you have to be a bit creative; it's not just about pressing a button and it'll be done. I had some leftover black ink, and after a few uses, Riso informed me that without a new tube of ink, they wouldn't continue printing. A quick glance at the shelf—all the colors were there, but no spare black! What should I do? Order and wait? Maybe I'll do some tinkering.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e Before I met Riso, I worked extensively with screen printing. One of the typical working methods for this technique involves pouring ink onto a screen, creating improvised gradients of different colors that blend in more or less unpredictable ways.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e I decided to draw on this method and experiment with a Riso. I loaded a black cylinder with navy blue paint. Start. Copy after copy, the remnants of black disappeared from the matrix, and more and more navy blue appeared. Because the rollers inside the cylinder spread the paint unevenly, stripes of varying intensity appeared on the design, creating a sense of space and uneven lighting. Additionally, to warm up the entire image a bit, I created a light layer of yellow, which filled in the unprinted spaces. I had a lot of trouble with color matching – I printed the black layer last (and all the other layers should be matched to it). I determined the order to avoid the paper from getting dirty from the roller picking up the sheets, precisely where there is a large patch of black on the print.
